How to choose a silhouette for the plus size bride

Everyone wants to look wonderful on their big day, but what is also very important is comfort. Only when you feel comfortable in your dress, especially your wedding dress, will you shine with confidence and happiness.

That is why choosing the right silhouette is very crucial. Plus size comes, as any other body type, in all shapes and forms; it is therefore not right as many suggest to ‘’simply wear an empire waist’’. Plus size women have many options to choose from, depending on their body type. So let us break down all the body types down into categories.

Apple

The weight is mostly concentrated on the upper part of the body – chest, waist, belly, often on the back, while legs and arms are slender.

Tip: Look for V-neckline or Scoop neckline to create an illusion of a longer body and to create an illusion of a smaller waist. The best option for a wedding dress silhouette will be an A-line silhouette.

Pear

The weight is concentrated mostly on the lower part of the body – hips, thighs, buttocks with often a more narrow shoulders and a more defined waist.

Tip: Go for wider necklines, such as Boat/Bateau or Square to balance out the upper part of your body with the lower part. Opt for ‘’fit and flare’’ dresses, A-line silhouettes and Empire waists. Do not be afraid to also dip into a little bit of asymmetry with the asymmetric details concentrated on the upper part of your body.

Straight

Also known as the rectangle or the pencil. Weight is distributed evenly throughout the body, meaning there are no obvious differences between the upper and lower part of the body.

Tip: Just like the Apple body type, try to make your waist look narrower. Deep V-cut neckline as well as Scoop neckline will look amazing on you. Go for Fit and flare dresses, A-line silhouettes, but do not be afraid to go into a trumpet/mermaid styled silhouette as well!

Hourglass

Full breasts and buttocks with a defined narrow waistline.

Tip: Show off you shapes and take the focus off problem parts. Go for simple streamlined silhouettes to accentuate what you already have given, you can add some peplums, but do not try to overdo it. Go for pencil skirts and avoid oversized cuts.

Inverted triangle

Wider shoulders and upper body opposed to a more narrow lower part.

Tip: Just like pear, only the other way around, balance out your look. Go for a V-neckline to bring the attention visually to the lower part of the body. Accentuate your waist, go for a jumpsuit with wide pants, fit and flare dresses and A-line silhouettes.

Love,

Melanie
