Wedding Dress Timeline & Planning
Order a made-to-measure wedding dress 4 to 6 months before your wedding: at least 18 weeks (just over 4 months) ahead for most gowns, and at least 22 weeks (just over 5 months) if the gown's page shows 10–14 or 12–16 weeks of production. Most Devotion Dresses gowns are made in 8 to 12 weeks and delivered 1 to 2 weeks later: 9 to 14 weeks from order to your door. Use the months before that to research, set a budget and shortlist, and the final weeks for accessories and last details.
A month-by-month guide so nothing is left to chance
How Long Does a Made-to-Measure Gown Take?
Every Devotion gown is made to order, so the clock starts when you order and send your measurements.
8–12 weeks of production — Most gowns in our collection, then 1–2 weeks of delivery: 9–14 weeks from order to your door.
10–14 or 12–16 weeks of production — The most detailed designs: 11–16 or 13–18 weeks door to door. Order these at least 22 weeks (just over 5 months) before the wedding.
Each product page shows that gown's production time, and its wedding date check gives the last day to order for your date. For the order-by date for every wedding month, and what to do if your date is sooner, read When to order your wedding dress: order-by dates for every wedding month.
9–12 Months Before: Research & Inspiration
This is the dreaming phase — and it matters more than most brides realise.
Create a vision board — Save images of dresses, venues, florals, and aesthetics that speak to you. After 50+ saves, patterns emerge — you will notice recurring silhouettes, necklines, or fabrics that define your style.
Set your budget — Decide what you're comfortable spending before you start shopping. Factor in the total cost, not just the dress price.
Understand your options — Research the difference between off-the-rack, made-to-measure, and bespoke. Each has different timelines and price points.
Browse collections — Start exploring online. Our collection of 1,100+ designs is filterable by silhouette, neckline, and style to help you narrow your vision.
6–8 Months Before: Shortlist & Decide
Narrow your favourites down to a few gowns.
Check each gown's production time — It is on every product page: 8–12 weeks for most gowns, 10–14 or 12–16 weeks for the most detailed. Enter your wedding date there to see the last day to order.
Match the fabric to your season and venue — Our wedding dress fabrics guide compares how each fabric looks, drapes and photographs.
Choose your wedding shoes — The measurement form asks for your heel height, so choose your shoes, or at least their heel height, before you measure.
Ask us anything — A real person from our team replies by chat, email or WhatsApp within one business day, and our AI assistant answers quick questions 24/7.
4–6 Months Before: Measure & Order
This is the window for ordering a made-to-measure wedding dress.
Submit measurements — Use our guided 21-point measurement tool. Each measurement is verified by our production team before cutting begins. Not ready yet? Choose Reserve & Measure Later and send your measurements within 30 days; production starts once we have them.
Place your order — Pay in full or in 3 interest-free monthly installments. The gown ships once all installments are paid.
Why 4–6 months? — Most gowns take 9–14 weeks from order to your door, so ordering 4 to 6 months ahead leaves about a month spare for delivery and any small adjustments. Ordering earlier is fine too: your gown simply arrives sooner. Measure at a weight you expect to keep until the wedding.
2–4 Months Before: Production & Accessories
Your dress is being handcrafted in our European atelier. Here's what to focus on:
Track your order — You will receive production updates at key milestones.
Plan accessories — Veil, shoes, jewellery, and hair accessories. We offer matching veils that coordinate with your gown.
Near Dublin? — In Ireland, an independently owned franchise showroom in Dublin sees brides by appointment. Wherever you are, our measurement process means your dress should arrive ready to wear, within 2.5 cm (1 in) of your ordered measurements.
Confirm wedding details — Venue, photographer, and the timeline for the day.
1–2 Months Before: Delivery & Preparation
Your dress arrives 1–2 weeks after production.
Receive your dress — Try it on as soon as it arrives: it was cut to your 21 measurements rather than from a sample size.
Steam and press — Allow your dress to hang for 24–48 hours after delivery to release any shipping creases. A light steam is usually all that's needed.
Practice wearing it — Walk, sit, dance, and move in your dress. Get comfortable with the train, the bustle (if applicable), and the overall weight.
Store safely — Keep your dress in its branded Devotion protection cover, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Final 2 Weeks: Last Details
The countdown is on — and your dress is ready.
Final try-on — Put on your dress with all accessories, shoes, and undergarments. Practise your first look, your walk, and getting in and out of a car.
Prepare a dress emergency kit — Include a small sewing kit, fashion tape, a stain pen, and safety pins. Assign a bridesmaid to carry it.
Plan your dress timeline for the day — Allow 45–60 minutes for getting into your dress, including lacing, buttoning, and final adjustments.
Breathe — You've made a thoughtful, informed choice. Your dress was made for you, by hand, with care. It's time to enjoy every moment.
Wedding Dress Timeline & Planning — FAQs
How far in advance should I order my wedding dress?
Order 4–6 months before your wedding: at least 18 weeks (just over 4 months) ahead for most gowns, and at least 22 weeks (just over 5 months) if the gown's page shows 10–14 or 12–16 weeks of production. Most gowns are made in 8–12 weeks, plus 1–2 weeks delivery; you can check your wedding date on any gown's page.
How long does it take to get a wedding dress?
9–14 weeks from order to your door for most Devotion gowns (8–12 weeks of production plus 1–2 weeks of delivery), and up to 18 weeks for the most detailed designs. Each product page shows the gown's own production time.
Can I get a wedding dress made in less than 8 weeks?
Our published production times start at 8 weeks. Need it sooner? On request, express production is possible from about 30 days from order to your door, worldwide, depending on the design and date: tell us your gown and your wedding date before you order, and a consultant will confirm whether express is possible for that design and date, and what it involves.
What happens if my wedding date changes?
We accommodate date changes whenever possible. If your wedding is postponed, we can adjust delivery timing. If it moves earlier, we will discuss options to meet your new timeline.
