Quick Answer
Made-to-measure wedding dresses at Devotion Dresses are cut from 21 of your body measurements, which our team checks before cutting, and hand-tailored in our European atelier at the same price as a standard size. Each gown is delivered within 2.5 cm (1 in) of your ordered measurements. Production takes 8–12 weeks for most gowns and 10–14 or 12–16 weeks for some; each gown's page shows its time. Delivery then takes 1–2 weeks. You measure at home with our guided video tutorials, and our team answers questions by chat, email or WhatsApp.
Made-to-measure is the middle ground between off-the-rack and bespoke: the design exists, but the dress itself is cut and sewn for your body, not pulled from inventory and altered down. At Devotion Dresses, every gown can be made to measure at the same price as its standard sizes. We work from 21 body measurements, check them with our production team and then hand-tailor the dress in our European atelier. This page explains how a gown tailored to you differs from one altered afterwards, how our process and timing work, the 21 measurements we work from, how a custom size helps if you are between sizes, and why made-to-measure often ends up costing less than ready-to-wear plus alterations.
Tailored to you vs altered afterwards
Ready-to-wear wedding dresses are made to a standard size chart, and most brides fall between sizes. The dress is then altered afterwards: a seamstress works backwards from a pattern that was never drawn for your proportions, and the alterations are paid on top. A made-to-measure dress is tailored to you before it is made. The pattern is cut from your 21 measurements, including bust, waist, hips, shoulder width, arm girth and torso length, which our team checks before cutting. The gown is delivered within 2.5 cm (1 in) of your ordered measurements, as our Terms of Service (5.1) state; a small local adjustment such as a hem may still be needed.
Our European atelier process
The process is the same for every bride. You choose your design and send your 21 measurements online, and our team answers your questions by chat, email or WhatsApp. We confirm the details of your gown with you, including silhouette, fabric, neckline, sleeves and train, and you can ask for changes before production begins. Our production team checks your measurements before any fabric is cut and contacts you if one looks unusual. The dress is then hand-tailored by seamstresses in our European atelier and gets a final quality check before it ships.
Made to order: timing
Every gown is made to order after you place it, never taken from stock. Production takes 8–12 weeks for most gowns and 10–14 or 12–16 weeks for some; each gown's page shows its time. Delivery then takes 1–2 weeks by DHL Express or UPS Priority. We recommend ordering 4 to 6 months before the wedding. With Reserve & Measure Later you can reserve a catalogue gown now and send your measurements within 30 days, at the same price.
The measurement system
Our measurement guide walks you through 21 body measurements — neck, upper, full and lower bust, natural waist, hips, height, waist-to-floor and waist-to-knee, shoulder span, front, back and side corset heights, bust height, arm and wrist girth and sleeve length, plus four optional ones: shoulder length, bust span, back span and cup size. Each measurement is collected with written instructions and video tutorials so accuracy is straightforward at home. Measurements are then validated by our production team before crafting begins; if anything looks unusual relative to your proportions, we reach out personally to double-check. This two-step check is how the dress is built around your measurements rather than altered down from a sample size.
Custom size wedding dress
If you are between sizes, or your measurements do not follow a standard size chart (a fuller bust with a smaller waist, a long torso, petite or tall proportions), a custom size is the simplest answer. Every gown in our catalogue can be ordered made to measure at the same price as its standard sizes, so a size of your own costs nothing extra. Choose Made to Measure on the gown's page and enter your 21 measurements, or reserve the gown now and send them within 30 days. If you prefer a standard size, our size chart shows how each size measures.
Why made-to-measure usually costs less than alterations on ready-to-wear
Alterations on a ready-to-wear wedding dress are paid on top of the gown, and the bill grows with how far the sample size sits from your measurements and how many panels need to be reworked. Our made-to-measure dresses have the personal fit included in the construction, not added afterwards. For brides who would otherwise buy a sample-size gown and then pay for alterations that still compromise the original design proportions, made-to-measure is often the more economical path. The gown arrives within 2.5 cm (1 in) of your ordered measurements; a small local adjustment such as a hem may still be needed.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between made-to-measure and bespoke?
- Made-to-measure starts from an existing design and cuts it to your measurements. Bespoke usually means a one-off design developed with a dressmaker over several in-person fittings. We work online and have no in-person fittings: every gown can be made to measure, you can ask for changes to its design, and for a dress from your own photo or sketch we send a free quote. A gown designed from your own idea is quoted from about US$1,000, depending on the design. You can pay for it in full or in 3 interest-free installments, or reserve it now and send your measurements later (Reserve & Measure Later).
- Do I need to visit your atelier to be measured?
- No. The full made-to-measure process can be completed remotely using our written measurement guide and video tutorials. Measurements are then validated by our production team before construction begins. In Ireland, an independently owned franchise showroom in Dublin also sees brides by appointment.
- How accurate is the fit on a made-to-measure dress?
- Each gown is cut from your 21 measurements, which our team checks before cutting; if one looks unusual next to the others, we contact you before going ahead. Under our Terms of Service (5.1), a made-to-measure gown is delivered within 2.5 cm (1 in) of your ordered measurements. A small local adjustment such as a hem may still be needed, and careful measuring at home, ideally with a second person, matters most.
- Can I get alterations later if my body changes?
- Yes. Most of our gowns include seam allowances that allow a local seamstress to take in or let out the bodice within a reasonable range. We are also happy to advise on which areas of your specific dress can be adjusted post-delivery — this is documented on a per-style basis.
- How long does a made-to-measure dress take to produce?
- Production takes 8–12 weeks for most gowns and 10–14 or 12–16 weeks for some; each gown's page shows its time. Delivery then takes 1–2 weeks. We recommend placing the order 4 to 6 months before the wedding; ordering earlier leaves extra room for a try-on and any small local adjustment. Need it sooner? On request, express production is possible from about 30 days from order to your door, worldwide, depending on the design and date: tell us your gown and your wedding date before you order, and a consultant will confirm whether express is possible for that design and date, and what it involves.
