How to Buy a Wedding Dress Online
Last updated September 2026
The short answer: Buying a wedding dress online is safe when you check seven things before you pay: who the seller legally is, independent reviews on sites the seller doesn't control, the fit tolerance written in its terms, what happens if the gown arrives defective, whether a custom gown can be returned, the full delivered price, and whether production plus delivery fits your wedding date. Gowns sewn to order take months, so start 4–6 months before the wedding.
Where to buy a wedding dress: four kinds of shop
There is no single best place to buy a wedding dress. It depends on whether you want to try gowns on, how soon the wedding is and how many fittings you want. This is a general comparison, not a ranking, and individual shops vary. Devotion Dresses is a made-to-measure online shop.
Four ways to buy a wedding dress (general comparison, September 2026)| Kind of shop | How you choose | Fit | Timing | Returns |
|---|
| Bridal boutique | You try on sample gowns in person | Usually ordered in a standard size, then altered | Often several months to order, plus alteration fittings | Ordered gowns are usually not returnable; check the shop's policy |
|---|
| Off-the-rack online shop | From photos, descriptions and a size chart | A standard size; alterations are often needed | Fastest when the gown is in stock | Often possible for unworn standard sizes, on the shop's terms |
|---|
| Made-to-measure online shop | From photos, videos and specifications; you send your measurements | Cut to your measurements; small final adjustments may still be needed | Made after you order: usually a few months, delivery included | Custom gowns usually can't be returned for a change of mind; check the defect cover |
|---|
| Bespoke dressmaker | You design the gown with a dressmaker | Fitted on you over several fittings | Usually the longest | Made only for you, so usually not returnable |

Seven checks before you pay
They apply to any shop, including ours.
- Who is the seller? Look for the company's legal name, registration number and registered address, usually in the footer, the Terms or the About page. You should know which company takes your money and in which country.
- What do independent reviews say? Read reviews on platforms the shop does not control, and look for photos from brides who received their gown, not only the testimonials on the shop's own site.
- What fit is promised in writing? A made-to-measure shop should say in its terms how closely the gown will match your measurements, and who checks your measurements before production starts.
- What if the gown arrives damaged or defective? Find the deadline for reporting a defect and the remedy: repair, exchange or refund. Check the parcel as soon as it arrives.
- Can the gown be returned? Gowns made to your measurements are usually not returnable for a change of mind. Find out whether standard sizes can be returned, within how many days and at what cost.
- What is the full delivered price? Add the delivery charge, any paid design changes and any VAT or import duties to the gown's price, and check which currency you will pay in.
- Does production plus delivery fit your date? Ask how long the gown takes to make and to ship, and leave a few weeks before the wedding for any final adjustments.

Is Devotion Dresses right for you?
Best for: Brides who want a gown cut to their own measurements without fittings, delivered anywhere in the world, and who can order about 4–6 months before the wedding.
Not the right fit if: Your wedding is less than about 3 months away (ask us first whether a design can be ready in time), you want to try gowns on before buying and live outside Ireland (our only showroom is an independently owned franchise in Dublin), or you want to be able to return a gown after a change of mind.
Questions brides ask about buying online
Is it safe to buy a wedding dress online?
Yes, if the shop passes the seven checks above: a named, registered seller, independent reviews, a written fit tolerance, a defect remedy, clear return rules, a full delivered price and a timeline that fits your date. The main risks are fit and timing, so measure carefully and order early.
Where should I buy my wedding dress?
It depends on what matters most to you: a bridal boutique if you want to try gowns on, an off-the-rack shop if the wedding is soon and a standard size fits you, a made-to-measure shop such as Devotion Dresses if you want a gown cut to your measurements without fittings, or a bespoke dressmaker for a one-off design with in-person fittings.
How far in advance should I order a wedding dress online?
Start about 4–6 months before the wedding for a gown sewn to order. At Devotion Dresses, production takes 8–16 weeks depending on the gown, plus 1–2 weeks' delivery, and a few weeks' margin allows for any final adjustments.

Do I need my measurements when I order?
Not at Devotion Dresses. With Reserve & Measure Later you pay in full or the first of 3 interest-free installments today and send your measurements within 30 days, at the same price.
What if I measure myself wrongly?
Our team reviews your measurements before production starts, and our guides show how to take each of the 21. The gown is made to the measurements in your order, within the 2.5 cm (1 in) allowance in our Terms, so ask a consultant if anything is unclear; minor final alterations by a local tailor may still be needed.

Can I pay for a wedding dress in installments?
Yes. At Devotion Dresses you can pay in full or in 3 interest-free monthly installments; your gown ships once every installment is paid.
Can I design my own wedding dress online?
Yes. Send a photo, sketch or description of the gown you want and our tailors reply within one business day with a free, no-obligation quote. The gown is made to your idea and your 21 measurements and delivered worldwide; we make designs inspired by your photo, not copies of other designers' gowns.
