Following the line of an hourglass figure
An hourglass figure has a bust and hips of similar width and a clearly narrower waist. The shapes stylists often suggest follow that line rather than skimming past it, and they are the three this page lists: mermaid and trumpet gowns, fitted through the bodice, waist and hips before the skirt opens, and sheath gowns, which stay close to the body down to the hem.
Mermaid and trumpet designs come first, and among them the ones with a corset bodice and a sweetheart, V, deep V or off-the-shoulder neckline, which show the waist and the décolletage together. Illusion, straight-across and high necklines appear further down, for brides who prefer more coverage or a cleaner top line.
Mermaid or trumpet comes down to where the flare starts. A mermaid stays fitted to around the knee and gives the most dramatic line; a trumpet opens higher, from mid-thigh, and is easier to walk, sit and dance in. Your waist-to-knee length is one of the 21 measurements we take, and with your waist and hips it sets where the fitted section ends on your gown.
Waist definition, fabric and support
More than half of these gowns have a corset bodice, which keeps the waist in shape through a long day, and nearly all list a built-in bra; each gown's details say which. Satin and crepe give a smooth, sculpted surface that shows the silhouette clearly, while lace and guipure add texture over the same shape. A belt or sash at the natural waist is another way to mark it: ask us by chat, email or WhatsApp whether one can be added to the gown you like.
A gown that follows the body leaves little ease, so your measurements matter more than usual. Take them in the underwear you will wear on the day, keep the tape level, and let our team check them before production. The gown arrives within 2.5 cm (1 in) of what you order, and a fitted silhouette may still want a small local adjustment, so leave time for it. Production takes 8–12 weeks for most of our gowns (10–14 or 12–16 for some, as each page shows), and delivery 1–2 weeks after that.
Which wedding dress silhouette suits an hourglass figure?
Mermaid, trumpet and sheath gowns are the shapes stylists often suggest, because they follow the waist and hips. A fitted A-line with a defined waist works too, if you want more room to move in the skirt.
Mermaid or trumpet: which is easier to wear?
A trumpet. It flares from mid-thigh, so walking, sitting and dancing are easier. A mermaid stays fitted to around the knee and gives the more dramatic line.
Will a fitted gown be comfortable all day?
Comfort comes from the cut. A gown made from your own bust, waist and hip measurements is shaped around you rather than around a size chart, and a corset bodice spreads its hold over the whole waist. When it arrives, sit, walk and lift your arms in it, and allow time for any small local adjustment.
Can the neckline be changed?
Sometimes. A few gowns list another neckline as a paid option on their page. For any other change, ask us by chat, email or WhatsApp before ordering: we reply within one business day and confirm whether it can be made and whether it costs extra.
